Irma's daughter and collaborator, Marion Rombauer Becker, became more involved with the affairs and working of JOY. Her influence is readily apparent in this revision, the first JOY ever to included how-to illustrations. As an artist and teacher, she knew the value of visual presentation as an aid to learning. She art directed the illustrations, working with Ginnie Hoffmann on many informative line drawings for this edition.

Through her new food world contacts, Irma was able to spice up the book with new culinary fashions and trends, according to Mendelson in Stand Facing the Stove, Their first real collaboration, this mother-daughter team reshaped the JOY to include home freezers, pressure cookers, blenders and electric mixers. Chicken Cacciatore, Bacon-Wrapped Prunes, Herring in Cream Sauce, Homemade Yogurt, and pizza (under the name Vegetable Shortcake) first appeared in this JOY. For people who lived in isolated areas, instructions on how to pasteurize milk at home and other unusual skills were included.
