THE JOY FAMILY
JOHN WILLIAM BECKER
1902 - 1974editor 1951-1975 editions
architect, editor
John was an active citizen of Cincinnati involved in many cultural and civic organizations. His talent as an architect is readily seen at the family estate, Cockaigne. John designed this Bauhaus-style country home in the mid thirties and it was completed in 1940. His work on JOY is usually a surprise to most people. Today, Ethan recalls, "It is little known that it was Pop's 'voice' that brought the wit to JOY. He had an incredible sense of humor and love of the English language that gave the book spice, personality, and character. Marion commented on his contributions in the 1963 and 1975 editions. "John has always contributed verve to this undertaking. His constant support and his crisp, creative editing have become an integral part of the book."
