Ikki Matsumoto

Ikki Matsumoto was born in Tokyo, Japan to a well-known cartoonist and children's book illustrator. In 1955, he came to the U.S. to study art. In 1957, he studied under the renowned humorous wildlife artist Charles Harper at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. He graduated in 1959 and married fellow student Polly Adamson. Ikki's love of wildlife illustrations led him to Sanibel, Florida where he and Polly opened a gallery. In 2006, Ikki and Polly retired from the gallery business and moved to a small town in rural Ohio. He continues to paint and market his work through the internet and local galleries. C&S National Bank owns and displays Ikki's largest corporate art collection.

In 1972, Marion Rombauer Becker commissioned Ikki to illustrate the 1975 edition of the Joy of Cooking. In 2005, he was contacted by Susan and Ethan Becker to help with illustrations on the 2006 anniversary edition of JOY. His input was invaluable, and over half of the illustrations in the new edition are based on his original work from the 1975 edition.
