Stand Facing the Stove
Ms. Mendelson is also the author of Stand Facing the Stove, a biography of the authors of The Joy of Cooking. In it she traces not only the private lives of Irma Rombauer and Marion Rombauer Becker but the history of JOY from the first privately printed edition (1931) to the end of Marion Becker's life (1977). Lovers of JOY will be fascinated by the story of its stormy publishing history, which more often than not pitted authors against publisher in strident battles.
